Why Malcolm believes better systems lead to bigger impact

Malcolm Colman-Shearer didn’t plan to end up in the nonprofit world. In fact, his early career began in the operations division of a bank—far from the community-centered work he leads today.

I ended up there by accident,” Malcolm says, reflecting on his time in finance. “I enjoyed learning how to optimize systems and processes, but it became clear over time that values really mattered to me—and they were missing.”

That realization was the beginning of a major shift. As the global financial crisis hit, Malcolm found himself doing what most people feared: trying to make himself redundant. But when even that failed, he did the bold thing—he quit.

From there, Malcolm began a slow and thoughtful journey to align his work with his values. “I went looking for communities and networks where my values were more aligned,” he says. That search led him to Enspiral, a community-driven impact network. From that foundation, he launched Optimi, a consultancy focused on helping mission-driven organizations improve their systems, processes, and digital operations…
